The Dangers of Raising Babies So, Kira, the mom bird of this clutch, was over feeding her babies and not keeping any food back for herself. She was in the nest box most of the time I was in the room, so I couldnt notice right away. But one morning she went to get a drink of water and fell and kept being off balance. So I caught her up to check her and turns out she was getting dangerously underweight. I immediately got the babies and put them in my heated cage to keep warm and set about checking both Kira and Odo. He seemed to be doing just fine, and it was only her. I called up my vet for advice but really just confirmed what I was thinking in the first place. I knew if I kept the babies with Odo hed get too overtaxed and/or may stop feeding the babies before they are ready. Even with supplemental handfeedings from me. He could get snippy with the kids and I didnt want to take the chance. Kira and Odo are temporarily separated while she rests up. I didnt want him pushing her for another clutch because the last one is gone and she needed the space. Kira is in a cage with the benefit of a heat lamp and extra food and water dishes. Ive handfed her a couple of times the first day just to make sure she got something in her and got her strength back up. Shes doing much better, I think I caught her just before it went over the edge. Odo is in the space next to her mostly just singing and beeping away. So Ive been handfeeding every 2-3 hours for the last couple days, which is also why Ive been absent. Honestly it was glorious to have had a solid 5 hours last night since they are just now getting to the point where they can go for longer. So yeah! Figured Id give you all the update. They are going to be entering their punk rock phase any time now and after that their growth will be so fast!
